Less Stress,
More Love
Support Group for Love Immigrants™
First - "What is a love
immigrant?"
I started describing myself with this term
in May, 1998 after relocating to the Netherlands
to be with my current husband. I found I wasn't an immigrant looking for a
better way
of life nor was I the classic expatriate living abroad due to my job or career.
I was somewhat excluded from both categories and services finding that I often
had to fend for myself both emotionally and financially. No companies
where going
to pay to ship my property abroad and few of the initial accompanying spouses I
met
in Expat clubs were supportive or understanding of my situation. Many of
them
just didn't get it that I didn't have a HR department or relocation
company paving the way for my transition.
In addition, as the love interest or partner of a Dutch national who sponsored
me into the country, I had to sign away most of the benefits an immigrant
receives
and be fined hfl 10,000 if I tried to apply for most forms of government
assistance.
I was truly on my own but happy in love...thus a love immigrant.
Group Information
The focus of this community is to assist you in building your
future together as a multi cultural couple addressing the various
stages of immigration, relationship issues, cross cultural differences
and practical approaches to reducing the stress involved.
We
will work together as a group to find ways for each member
to thrive in their new environment while building a support system
virtually as well. For those still living apart, we will share our
strengths
so you too can find ways to enjoy life fully while waiting to be with
the special someone in your life.
One of the most important things
I have learned while living abroad
and also apart from my partner before I relocated, is that
my support system doesn't need to be a physical or local one only.
Also, I learned that what I
experience in one country is quite similar to what
others are experiencing in other countries in regards to acculturation.
In other words, the Love Immigrant experience tends to be universal.
