Goals are dreams with a deadline
~ Nicci Nowinski

Start writing your goals down - just by taking that action increases the chance of them becoming a reality.  It gets you thinking about what you want out of life and creates the space for you to take advantage of the opportunity when it arises because you will recognize it affects one of the goals you have in life.

Motivational Stories to read and live by....

Rocks, Pebbles, Sand

A philosophy professor stood before his class and had some items in front of him. When class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, rocks about 2 inches in diameter. He then asked  the students if the jar was full? They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar.

He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The students laughed.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else.

Now, said the professor, I want you to recognize that this is your life:

...The rocks are the important things - your family, your partner, your health, your children - anything that is so important to you that if it were lost, you would be nearly destroyed.

...The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house,  your car.

...The sand is everything else. The small stuff.

If you put the sand into the jar first, there is no room for the pebbles or  the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your energy and time on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups.

Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work,  clean the house, give a dinner party and fix the disposal.

Take care of the rocks first - the things that really matter. Set your priorities.

 The rest is just sand.

The Invitation

By Oriah Mountain Dreamer (Native American Elder)

It doesn’t interest me what you do for a living.  I want to know what you ache for, and if you dare to dream of meeting your heart’s longing.

It doesn’t interest me how old you are.  I want to know if you will risk looking like a fool for love, for your dreams, for the adventure of being alive.

It doesn’t interest me what planets are squaring your moon.  I want to know if you have touched the center of your own sorrow, if you have been opened by life’s betrayals, or if you have become shriveled and closed from fear of further pain.

I want to know if you can sit, with pain, your own or mine, without moving to hide it or fade it or fix it.

I want to know if you can be with joy, mine or your own, if you can dance with wildness and let the ecstasy fill you to the tips of your fingers and toes without cautioning us to be careful, be realistic, or to remember the limitations of being human.

It doesn’t interest me if the story you’re telling me is true.  I want to know if you can disappoint another to be true to yourself, if you can bear the accusation of betrayal and not betray your own soul.

I want to know if you can live with failure, yours and mine, and still stand on the edge of a lake and shout to the silver of the full moon," YES”!!

I doesn’t interest me to know where you live or how much money you have.

I want to know if you can get up after a night of grief and despair, weary and bruised to the bone, and do what needs to be done for the children.

It doesn’t interest me who you are, how you came to be here.  I want to know if you will stand in the center of the fire with me and not shrink back.

It doesn’t interest me where or what or with whom you have studied.  I want to know what sustains you from the inside when all else falls away.

I want to know if you can be alone with yourself, and if you truly like the company you keep in the empty moments.

Make a list of 5 things you are tolerating.  Stop. Get some paper, do it RIGHT NOW. I'll wait.... 5 things written down?  Good.  Now pick 2 that you will eliminate from your life this week.  Then pick a date to remove the last 3.  Don't think about it.

Mission Statement:  This is your life....What is your mission?  Write a statement that describes what your purpose is and what you hope to accomplish. Next time you feel lost and off track read your mission statement to help you get back on the right path.

Volunteer.  Get outside of yourself.  Help others and feel the buzz you get.  It usually only costs a bit of your time but makes a huge difference in the lives of others and comes back to you in untold ways.  Not sure what to do?  Think of your interests and share that with others.  If you are great at computers teach people at the local senior center how to get online or help them set up a computer program.  Love animals - join a group that helps injured animals heal and return to their natural habitat.  Just stop thinking about the "niceness" of volunteering and start giving a bit of time.  Frankly, it's another form of self care on a greater scale.  Don't buy the bullshit...One person can make a difference.
