Love Immigrant Laughs

Funny, embarrassing, or silly experiences that couples had on their relationship journey

Word Struggles

I remember my first year of living in Holland... I was out with Maarten and his parents and I
was trying to speak Dutch with his mother.  In my attempt to tell her something about the color
yellow in conjuction with her son (the Dutch word for yellow is very close to the Dutch word for
horny as in wanting sex) I managed to inform them all how horny I was with Maarten.
They all laughed as I sat there in horror as they explained what I had said.

Silly Sayings

Our cat, Bailey, adopted us about 6 months ago when she kept wandering into our garden and
eventually into our house.  We've loved getting to know her but sometimes she gets into these 'moods'.
She runs around wanting to get into everything, including the tiniest of spaces, and the only way to get her
to stop is to put her outside for awhile.  Recently, she was in one of these moods when my Dutch husband
walked into the room.  He asked what was wrong with her and I said,
"Well, she's got some sort of bug up her butt."
Not knowing what I meant, he took it literally and started looking more closely at her and asked
me if I was serious?  After a good laugh, I had to explain that in fact it was an expression and not a
literal bug which had crawled up into her backside.  So much for the English language!

Crazy Couples

Clarity and Marcel Jonker used to live in the Utrecht Province in the Netherlands.
In Utrecht there is a huge Bell Tower named The Dom Tower.  It is famous and you can climb
up to the top of the tower (if you are brave and in good shape) to have a good view over the city.
Marcel informed Clarity that if she wanted she could, "mount the Dom".  Clarity's response
with a naughty grin was,
it would take quite a woman to do that!
Of course she explained to him the difference between mounting and climbing.
